Marcia Burtt (b. 1941) earned her BA at the University of California at Berkeley, and her master's degree in fine art from the University of Montana. Having painted in acrylics for more than thirty years, Burtt is a champion of the medium's versatility and frequently teaches workshops for aspiring plein air painters.
Painting on location requires that an artist gather important details about light and color with efficiency, as these conditions tend to change rapidly out of doors. This time constraint has proven to be liberating for an artist committed to capturing the essense of the landscape. Burtt creates paintings that are convincing-water that looks wet and shadows that appear to be moving-yet never tarries in so much detail as to take away from the visceral experience of standing in nature. Her paintings are brilliant, shore essays in color that can be appreciated for their abstract arrangements as well as their capability to transport viewers to the scene that she lovingly observed.
In keeping with her passion for subject, Burtt is a founding member of The Oak Group and of SCAPE (Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment). Together, these groups have raised over one million dollars toward the preservation of open spaces. Burtt's paintings have been included in exhibitions organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, a number of other regional museums, and have been featured in several national magazines, including American Artist, Fine Art Connoisseur and Plein Air Magazine. Her work is included in the collections of Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston among other private and public collections. She and her husband, Dave, live on a twelve-hundred acre ranch on California's central coast.
